Tomorrow I am going to have my second photoshoot. And I wondered about tipping. For my previous shoot I went to a makeup artist first (a MAC makeup artist) and had my makeup done. I love my MAC artist and I always tip her very well. Tomorrow's shoot is at the photographer's studio. The MUA is hired by the photographer. Should I tip her? Should I tip the photographer? Of course I am paying a goodly amount for the session. So any feedback from you gals more experienced with photoshoots? Sorry about the late request but I have been trying to do everything to get ready for it and that question just popped back into my mind.

I consider the Stylists on a photoshoot that is included in the package are deserving a tip when a.) you immediately like the results in THE MIRROR  b.) u have talked to the photographer beforehand about the expected amt. of time/labor it will take for the stylists to do a "transformation" (such as the case in many of my shoots since I can tend to have some challenging grooming issues at times.. and c.) talking to the stylists before they begin so you both know what you expect and listen and respond accordingly while respecting them w/the trust that they deserve once they've begun. (i.e. Kill The Diva/micro-manging bits). Remember; this is a service and only you can have this opportunity to turn this into a professional transaction.

If u are still unsure or haven't the money to tip:: Reach out to social/profressional resources to evaluate your feelings of your experience..

Good luck everyone!

If this is a photo shoot, no tipping is necessary. Either it all Trade for X in which case model, photographer, and MUA all get something out of the experience. Alternatively if the photographer hired the MUA (as I generally do) then the MUA is getting paid a fee to be there. Tipping is not necessary or expected.

If you are getting done by a MUA BEFORE going to a shoot and arranged it yourself, then tip or not as you normally would.

This depends on the job. If you arranged for a creative collaboration, and you're trading services, then no tip is required. If this is a paid job that you hired the photographer to do and arrange, then absolutely because she's not only working for him, but is also working for you. If the shoot was arranged by a third party (designer, business, publication), then it's not necessary. There's probably already an arrangement for the MUA. If the photographer hired/is using you for a shoot he arranged and he hires a MUA to come do makeup, you can tip, but it's again not necessary. If in doubt, however, you can always ask him/her. But again, in this type of case, you wouldn't have arranged the entire job so you don't have to feel so obligated. As you can see, it all depends on who originally did arrange the job. I arranged a shoot to update some of my pin-up shots, and my MUA got tipped 30 percent. It's also nice to in such case tip your photographer as well. :)
