Scrubbin' Mussels !!

Hey - I know this is TOTALLY off topic, but we are looking to produce an artwork using Mussel shells, mounted onto velvet pillows. Does anyone know if they can go through the dishwasher to rid them of the fishy smell and algae etc ?? - possibly the most random post ever published on PUL, but we know you guys are creative types ?? lol

My dad used to boil the shells and starfish I collected to get rid of the smell. Just a pot of boiling water and a little vinegar for really tough smells should do it.
