There's a fella with whom I work from time to time, and while we've never spent time together socially, we are friendly and share some common graphic design interests. I sent him a link the other day to some new, expensive, limited-edition, 1963-style sneakers because I thought he'd get a kick out of them. At the end of my message, I jokingly added "Please buy me a pair in color 274."

He did.

I thought he was kidding when he told me. I asked him to cancel the order, and therefore eat the cost of only the non-refundable deposit, instead of the full purchase price, but he said no. I suggested that he resell them on eBay, and get his money back, but he said no. All I can do is say "thank you," with as much grace as I can stammer.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? How did you handle it?

Cliff not sure where the giggling comes into play here. I don't give a rats ass what your intentions are if they don't line up with the intentions of the site the madams will destroy you. And soliciting escapes for "fun" is not pro photographer behavior.
Wink I think you handled it as politely as you possibly could have and like a true lady. I've not been in this situation before. I've noticed that some models have a wishlist system set up where fans and admirers can buy the model a gift if they wanted to...and I can't say that I haven't thought about doing this if I ever get my website going. BUT, they would never know where I live, it would go to a PO Box or something. That is more on an impersonal level though. Not from a direct conversation like you had. I guess all you can do after saying no a few times is Thank you.
That said, Wink could you buy me this Wii? Do they come in pink yet?

I know, I know, it's off topic... but look, pink Wii skins!

HAHA! OK I just yelled to my BF from across the living room..."Look, you can buy skins for your Wii!"
When said out loud and out of context is sounds a bit different.

I think it's sweet what he did. I have a few "male friends", not boy friends but boys who are friends or acquaintances, and many of them have bought me things or given me presents for no reason other then to be nice. There have of course been others with intentions, but as long as you are clear about the nature of your relationship there is no reason to say no to gifts.

Richard Burton once said, "The wonderful thing about Elizabeth Taylor is that she loves jewels so much that she makes even a stingy man like me want to give her jewelry just to see the thrill she gets when she sees it."

Maybe your friend is like this, maybe he just wants to see you happy.

A thank you and a maybe hug is all you need to give in return, although a nice thank you note goes a long way.
wow girl...that's an amazing story. Sometimes people are blessed with a girft for generousity. You just say thank you, and remember to pay it forward some day!
