There's a fella with whom I work from time to time, and while we've never spent time together socially, we are friendly and share some common graphic design interests. I sent him a link the other day to some new, expensive, limited-edition, 1963-style sneakers because I thought he'd get a kick out of them. At the end of my message, I jokingly added "Please buy me a pair in color 274."

He did.

I thought he was kidding when he told me. I asked him to cancel the order, and therefore eat the cost of only the non-refundable deposit, instead of the full purchase price, but he said no. I suggested that he resell them on eBay, and get his money back, but he said no. All I can do is say "thank you," with as much grace as I can stammer.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? How did you handle it?

holly crap wink, send him to me! no just kidding. men only do that for gals they want to sleep with, well im my experiance. make sure your not leading him on, im sure your not intentionaly, but he may think so. if not then wow, he needs to know me. haaaaa.
He knows all about my love life, and that he doesn't have a snowball's chance, so I'm confident he's not trying to "bribe" me. At least I don't have to worry about that!

Haha. Sounds like he had spare cash...
Nice of him.

might not be the case, but i'd be careful
don't forget to show us those platinum sneakers...pinup style, of course!
thats right, he might know but is still hoping. im still skeptical of this being healthy for him, or you. but i hope it was just a gift.

Cliff, I agree with you. My original reason for posting was to find out HOW best to thank him, not to malign his good intentions!

hmmm what to say to this..well....not every guy is after something..some of us have more character and class and we do things * just because we're nice* and sometimes it's even done with out a thank you from the reciepient. It'doesn't matter. Once in a while you see someone( male or female) who could use a little gift of something you have or can offer and you just do it.
ohh wait..your right..maybe I DID expect something out of it...maybe I expected you to pay it foward some day when YOU have the chance to do something nice.
is the guy really a creepy or was he just being nice? Thats where you (the person recieving) the gift have to decide....because if he IS creepy then you need to give it back so he understands how you feel about him.
this thread will make me think twice befor I do a good deed again.....
I'd suggest that you do think twice sir. ;)

"Hello and good day!

Somewhere in one of the boards you mentioned wanting to do an old stye glam shot (?) Is the type of shot your looking for on the following link?.... http://www.bombshells.com/prints/index.php ....if so....here's the story and we'll see if you take it hook, line and sinker...(another grin )......and so we begin..... I invite you to Sunol, Ca. where in the 30's you will find that CROCKER bBank tycoon bought the whole valley I live in where he built cottages for his employees to escape the CITY of S>F. for weekend adventures.....(this would be an escape for you) < THE Line...heh.... My wife and I live in here an turn of the century victorian farmhouse the oozes old stye charm both inside and out. If you were to entertain the thought of a photoshoot here, the most I could promise is an interesting time, hopefully fun time, and really hopefully some good pictures. I use the old style keg light of the 30's 50's and 60's style meaning they are the old hot lights(continous). Most the
pictures on my page (studio type), are taken here. Also the pictures on Myspace (studio) are here also.
I can not pay, nor do I charge for shoots....however...depending on what kind of car you drive I might be able to donate towards fuel.
I would love to try to recreate the style of pictures on the site above.

If interested or want to chat more about this... drop me a line...

Cliff"
