Rag curls how to?

So here's the thing.  I am new to the pin up lifestyle.  The clothing I can do, cute shoes are easy and dresses/skirts no problem.  I even can partially do my makeup alright with a little bit of time and references to look at. 

It's the hair I have troubles with.  I would rather do something like Rag curls because I am not a curling iron kind of girl normally.  During the day I could use velcro rollers/a curling iron but during the evening I don't like sleeping on rollers.  With the right product my hair does keep a bit of curl so that's not a problem.  I've got hair about an inch longer than my chin so there isn't a lot of hair either to deal with.   

 

So any advice like the kind of material I can use or what works best or if there are any hair curlers that are softer?  The only reference I have right now is the Vintage Vixen blog which is great except I need the minor details help too.  Any advice would be great thanks.

you can also use a flat iron to do curls. you can twist the hair around the flat iron to curl it, or you can make pin curls and flat iron over them and it will keep the curl
