hi i am very new to diy. i have a jean jaket i am wanting to make in to a vest. what i want to do is take d-rings(i think that's what they are called), and line then up the back, so that when i lace a ribbon through them it makes a corset back. what i need help with is on how to put the d-rings on. do i sew them on, or are there some that will pierce through the denim, like a stud does? sorry if these are stupid questions, but i really haven't done anything other then using fabric glue, and those iron on things. thanks in advance.
Not stupid questions at all!
If you want a corset back, then it sounds like it will fit at least snug, if not tight. I would definitely sew them onto the back. Any other way might just pop off when you wear it. You could either hand stitch the d rings onto the back, or you could use bias tape (available at any fabric store) in a coordinating color, cut approx. 1" pieces, loop the pieces around the d rings, then sew that onto the back of your piece. Another thing you could do is buy grommets that come on a tape already (again, available at some fabric stores) and stitch that up the back of your piece.
Hope this helps!
it does thank you. and the jacket is already tight, but i am not sure how functional the corset back would really be, mostly just going for the look, if that makes any sense.
It makes perfect sense! Since it's denim, even if you are just going for the corset look, it still needs to be durable. Generally the heavier the fabric, the sturdier the notions need to be.
