Moving to Augusta, GA.....anyone there or been there?

So I just found out that my husband and I will be moving to Augusta, GA between this coming December and next March( he is in the Navy). I have never been to the south and have no idea what to expect. So is anyone living there or visited there before. Really anything helps! I'm kinda terrified and excited all at once!

I grew up in the South (just outside of New Orleans) and have visited Augusta once or twice b/c my cousin moved there with her husband. Augusta is a lovely city and it's close to Atlanta so you'll have plenty to do. Things are rather slow-paced and laid-back. You'll likely be on base? I don't know if the culture there is different because there are people from so many areas there. Outside the base, just think typical Southern culture: gracious and kind to people, even strangers. That's the ideal, anyway. I know when I moved out to California I thought people were rather rude until I realized it was a culture thing. And I think some of my friends out here thought I was overly solicitous of their feelings b/c that's just how we Southerners are. We would rather go out of our way to avoid being rude than the opposite. Another thing you will notice is that Southerners tend to FEED people. Omg, in my family it was like a mortal sin NOT to take a second helping at the dinner table. Lol. One negative you might find, and I am deeply ashamed to say this is that the race barrier is still sometimes an issue down south. It gets better with each new generation, but sometimes prejudice is still there.

Just relax, be yourself and enjoy scenic Augusta. Don't worry too much about making social mistakes; it's honestly not that big of a deal.

I've been there once when I was visiting family in Greensboro. We went to a place called Funsville - it's a fun little amusement park. What Cherry Cyanide said is true - it's a very slow-paced lifestyle down South (my dad gets a newspaper once a week!) but the people are super-nice and will feed you whether you're hungry or not!

I am really glad that I am not the only one that had an issue when I first moved to Cali. I kinda took it personally for a while, then I realized that is just how people are. I am from a small town in Montana originally where it is custom to be polite to strangers. People here thought that I was crazy and ask me where I was from...lol....it was that obvious. I have grown to love it and will really miss it when we leave.

Ellie, I'm glad it's not just me either! People kinda give you a look here when you smile and say good morning, Like you're a little bit nutso. I'm here 3 years and it still sometimes gets to me. Lol. (Don't get me wrong- I've met some cool people.) How long were you in Cali?

I know Augusta is kinda affluent but I didn't pick up on any overt snobbery in the short time I was there. I have a friend who spent almost a year on base, so I;m trying to contact him for his perspective.

I live 2 hours south of Augusta, near Savannah. Augusta ia a very academic city.I have not been there myself but I have not heard anything negative about it. I moved to Georgiafrom central Florida almost 4 years ago. People are very genuine and friendly. I don't know where you are from but I caan tell you what not to do once you get here. There is nothing a southerner hates more than people who move here from somewhere north of here and say " We didn't do things this way up north." with a negative tone. You will be told that the road goes north too. lol My friend does that constantly and I give her " the look" and tell her that she is free to return to Wisconsin. If you decide to visit Savannah sometime, lets get together.
