MagCloud: Make your own pin up magazine

I was looking at this, and it looks pretty cool.

Basically, you make a .pdf file (there's lots of free programs that will do this), include your photos, and upload it to MagCloud.

 

They will print and bind a magazine for you, for VERY reasonable rates, adn there's no minimum order. You can order just one.

 

I think it would be pretty cool to do your own pin up magazine. Plus magazine covers are fun to make with photo shop or something free like Gimp.

I just checked out the website and it looks pretty sweet!  You can also sell your mags on their site!  I feel a project coming on...

I gave it a try, and it does work. However, there is a learning curve. I don't have any of the commercial programs for creating a .pdf file, like Adobe Indesign. So I used a free program called Scribus, which you can download.

 

 two things I ran into  were a bit tricky. Images have to be 300 dpi. This is ONLY a printing thing. If you change an image's dpi, you can't tell by looking at it on your computer. Most images you take with a camera are NOT 300 dpi, becuase they are not set up for a  pro printer. You just have to use something like gimp (free) or photo shop to change the image to 300 dpi, not that much trouble really.

 

Next, the placing is tricky. I couldn't figure out how to place the pages EXACTLY without using trial and error. When they print magazines, to make them look right, after they print them, they trim them. So, there's margins where the picutres and text have to go. If you don't make the picture big enough you end up with a little white border and the picture doesn't go to the edge of the page. If you make the picture to big, some gets cut off.

 

But other than that, it does work very well and is a lot of fun to do.

There are a few pin up magazines who use mag cloud. Pin Up Perfection and The Pin Up Mag. Check them out for a couple of good examples.
