I'm new to the site, so what's this all about?

A friend suggested that i join the site. I currently studying a degree in design and my current project explores the relationship between the 'domestic housewife' roll and how it relates to contemporary society.

Just wondering if anyone could help clarify or share their opinions on the 'domestic' roll, how or if it relates to you! whether you for it or against it.

Conceptually I've been looking at work by, Jo Spence, Cindy Sherman and Guerrilla Girls. if you can think of any other relevant sources please share.

thanks ella

Hey there, welcome to the site.

Well i don't think i can say i'm aganist it, as i work full timeand fulfil the majority of the household duties, with help from my partner, IE if i give him a list it and nag then it will be done.
But women seem to have more common sense on what needs to be done.

Women fighted for rights to vote, work and have a career etc.
Only trouble is they have all that, but also still the housework.
I would be more than happy to be a "50's style housewife" if i didn't have to work, and mu partner was the bread winner, but as both my partner and i work, and can not afford not too, that won't happen.

I love Cindy Sherman - amazing artist, done many projects on her at Art school, her awesome art in photography form - tackling uncomfortable and grotesque images, with alot of flack from feminists on the way.

If you are talking about feminist issues - i used to reffered to alot of lyrics from riot grrrl bands in the US, such as Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland, H*** etc. There is alot in the riot grrrl movement that could help you to research.

Thanks for your comment and advise on the lyrics and how I could apply them to my work to form a stronger context for my visual research.

I guess 'we' as women have it all to some extent. We can be a mother a housewife and have a full time career. We finally have control or at least a say in our futures.

I think all women have that maternal instinct and domestic tendencies within them, whether it nature or nurture. Ultimately we can choose to act on it or not.

Thanks again for your input, please feel free to comment or contact me again if you think of any other relevant research directions.

My mum stayed home to raise me and my sibling, i guess it took that for granted as well. Thinking about it during that time she managed to teach me so much about life, all those things they don't teach in school. There's no way I could live on my own and survive without knowing how to cook, clean and sort out my washing. These chores seem so demeaning but they're invaluable.

So if we all appreciate the roll our mothers played in our childhood then why is there such a stigma associated with the housewife roll? I guess that's what I've got to resolve.
thanks for sharing your views.

Firstly, wow your mother is so beautiful! She must have been a great inspiration to you, having provided you with such an exceptional upbringing.

I think today's society have lost sight if what is important in life. We do need to reconnect with family values. I'm familiar with single parent families, most of my friend are single parents. I've seen them struggling to balance parenthood, collage and careers.

Socially I do feel pressure to be 'more' than a housewife. The feeling that I should achieve more because I have pushed myself through school and university. I don't know if this feeling is emphasised by the fact that it has taken thousands of years of social evolution to allow men and women to be considered equal and by failing to contest this male dominated world I am failing as an independent woman.

I guess my future is in my own hands, I can be whoever I want, do whatever i see fit. I just nee to figure out what it is I want.

thanks
please keep in touch, ella
