How important is it for you to customize your profiles?

We mean colors/backgrounds etc. That stuff getting out of hand is exactly what pushed people away from MySpace and the uniformity doesn't bother many on Facebook.

Thoughts? Our ears are open...

I look at my page as an extension of me. Like my clothes and my hair, I want it reflect my personality. The thing I hate most about facebook is that it is boring. That's why I only ever check it from my phone, there is nothing interesting to look at. I'm not saying I would leave PL if it looked uniform, that would be ridiculous, and I can't imagine anyone not liking it here for that reason. But I do think that in a creative sub-culture like this one, being able to express yourself and show your individuality is important.

I pretty much second Roxy. The customization on here is simple and nice. It IS nice not to be PUSHED to "do up" your profile, but it is also nice to have the option to show your personality through it.  I think MySpace had it a bit overwhelming. Too much cluttered into a small space and on here, I haven't seen that with people's profiles.

I remember when I first joined the site I was unfamiliar with how the site works and had to put some effort into it, but that's with any site you are new to (tutorial, perhaps?...but it's pretty self explanatory really). I had ONE question about how to customize my profile and then I was good. It's nice that there are Madams and that you and Desi are active on here, so any questions people have are answered quickly and correctly. Got off track, but I like a little customization.   :)

I also agree. I like to see others profiles & their customizing. Profiles to me show their personality that is expressed without knowing them in person.

I like being able to go all out with customization. Obviously, lol. That's the only thing that I liked about Myspace, really, was that you could do a lot as far as layouts go. I guess when it comes down to it, though, it's ease in navigating through someone's page vs. having to wade through a ton of random images that people plaster on their profiles. I like how organized and simplified Facebook is, although I do wish they had more cosmetic options for people to choose from. Give us the chance to at least change the background image or SOMETHING, you know? I like the new FB look, with the banner at the top. I have it set to where it has my name surrounded by purple leopard print. Although it isn't a Facebook glamor breakthrough in ultimate customization, I dig it, and like that my page is somewhat more "me"...ish.

Honestly, I feel like a tutorial would help. I'm a new member and I'm having slight difficulty figuring out how to customize my profile.
I love being able to customize my webpages, I customize everything else in my life why stop with web pages! Although I do thing there need to be limits, Myspace did have a lot of unfortunate looking layouts. Simplicity is key!

I think customizing is fun, to a certain degree.

If you look at Myspace some people can just redo the whole thing and it still looks great and better that the original, others will just go over the top and just looking at it gives me a headache.

I would rather have notification system, telling me when I have a new comment on my page/picture or if something in a thread I'm active in has been posted.

Maybe these things work? But not for me, I only see friend requests and mail. Do I need to change settings?

Like Scarlett Poppy write simplicity is the key, customizing is fun and make people care about their page.

But not too much, I like when the basics are the same for all users and you don't need to look 5 minutes to find  where they live or how to send them a message ;)

Thank you everyone for your feedback, this is exactly the info we were looking for! We now know that you like the ability to customize but not "glitter up" your profiles with crap.

Also we need to make the customization tutorial video put together by the beautiful Tessa LeTaunt even more prominent. In case you did miss it, you can view it right here...

I prefer a quick loading, sleek site and if that means that some of the customization goes away, it would be fine with me.  I want to be able to move around a site without having to hit the volume controls because the unexpected music  or be slowed down by too many fancy things.

I agree that it go over the top with Myspace.  I'd get requests from people who's pages had so much crap loaded on them that trying to veiw it would freeze my computer.  I'd turn their friend request down if that happened.

I think that what you can do with PL is tasteful.  Haven't seen anyone using those crazy glittery letters or avatar comments, seems as though we're all adults here!  I used to get a lot of people asking how I got the background I use on here, and I think a little cutomizing makes a page more personal.  I'd miss my pretty pin-up ladies background!

Thanks!!!

Is there a change already, a lot of white backrounds now. :-(

For looking at photo's, I prever the Black backround over white.
