I was just wondering how everyone got their start. I've only gotten photos taken, but I haven't really done much else. I'd love to get my name out there though! Is there anywhere I can send my photos or anyone I can talk to that "you've" worked with before? This site is so awesome and I feel like this is definitely a great start. I'd love any advice. Thanks so much everyone!!

I probably have a different approach than many. So, take it for what it's worth :)

A dear friend harassed me for over a year before I decided to take my first professional photo. But when I did, let me tell you! I was in loooooove with the camera!

The reason I think my approach is different is because I don't model for the same reasons that others do.

I started with that first photoshoot, I've always been a girly girl, but now I can get all dressed up for photoshoots, and I just loooove it, yay!! And that's it. :D Compensation wasn't important, more MySpace friends wasn't important, attention from the boys wasn't important, having tons of fans wasn't important, you get my drift.

I did what I love, because I loved it. Once that happened, people noticed, I started getting compensated for modeling, got a ton of MySpace friends and fans, boys paid attention, and now you're reading my post, pretty cool right?!

I never asked artists to draw me, I waited for them to be inspired by images and ask me for the rights to use them as reference. I never asked to participate in events, I waited for the organizers to be interested in my look and invite me. I never asked popular photographers to photograph me, I just waited for them to one day take notice of my work and invite me to their studios.

I also didn't believe in spam. Adding mass amounts of MySpace friends to gain popularity or exposure wasn't my style. I'm not saying any of this is wrong, it's just not for me. Just like asking a boy out isn't my style, I wait to be asked.

Organic growth is more sustainable, in my opinion. Be good at what you do and maybe the right people will notice. Good work doesn't have to be placed in someone's lap, just do your best and great things will follow.
I do realize that some girls want to model for monetary reasons. And for that, you probably do need to have a marketing plan, etc. I think the reason my approach is different is because I have a full time career that pays my bills. Once my wrinkles set in, I'll need it!
Thanks for all the wonderful advice. I love being in front of the camera too. I've been a ham since I was little haha. I don't really care about boys or myspace either, I just feel like "sometimes it'd be nice to get paid for my work." But either way it's okay because I really enjoy doing it. I'm actually a culinary student and momma, this is just a fun side for me that I'd like to keep doing until I start getting wrinkles too. :)

That is GREAT advice and I am going to follow it! Thank you. <3

I was urged by friends to get into modeling too. And 3 years ago i also thought "I'll wait to be asked" after all, I was new. And I do model because I love the artistic opportunity, and not for money, I never ask for money. However 3 years and lots of casting calls later- I'm not really getting asked by people to model things and I am only invtited to large events to help fill up space and sell another ticket, and a lot of these events are way to far to travel to on my budget. The photographers that ask to shoot me are new and looking for experience. The ones I admire I can't afford.
So now I am evaluating myself and whether I should give it up.
I think if anyone wants to get their name out there- a little marketing might be nessisary, or at least expressing an interest to people you'd like to work with- something I've neglected to do for myself.
