I'm having all sorts of trouble with this one; every red I try on makes me feel like a clown. I was just wondering if you gals had any hints I hadn't thought about?

I just don't quite feel right all dolled up, without the red lipstick to complete the look...

Take a trusted friend and head to the department store. You can try on all different shades, and you have the ladies that work there, and your friend to tell you what looks best. If you really don't feel comfortable in the red lipstick, maybe try some red glosses or stains.

Good luck!
I STRONGLY recommend Besame' lipstick! There are so many wonderful Vintage reds to choose from. The packaging is brilliant and there is sure to be a perfect red to suit your skin tone. I also love Masuimi Max's I Am Trouble line matte lipstick in Winter Red. :) Here is my review for Besame' Lipstick. :)

Post a pic of your complexion in the daylight.
Oh I had that same problem! I didn't find my shade of red until I got my make up done for my first shoot.

I think Roxy's idea is probably the best way to start.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I've found that I feel less clown-like when I apply my reds with a lipstick brush. It just seems to look better while allowing the color to be as vibrant as I want. And it's gotten 2 thumbs up from my beau! He didn't like it too much before =)

That's a great idea. I'll give that one a try =]
The problem with getting the department store ladies to help me out is none of the department stores locally do that, only the ones in Melbourne (3 hours away...)... =[
Yay! Hopefully it helps!

It's not so much about finding the exact shade of red that's, "vintage" but rather finding the exact shade of red for you. I have an olive complexion but am actually quite pale (meaning I'm slightly green or slightly yellow if it's not July or August). If there is an orange hue in the lipstick I look like a freak.

I suggest taking a friend and asking the counter help as others did. I also suggest picking out a nice red that you think looks good and teaming it up with a medium shade brown (Revlon's Rum Raisin works for me.) I use the rum raisin as a base coat and pat pat pat. Then I add the red. I'll just dab the red lipstick to start and then add a little more depending on the depth of statement I want to make.

And..sometimes, on those crazy nights...I'll add a touch of gloss!
oh...I KNOW what you mean. I strong suggest Prescriptives, (http://www.prescriptives.com/), they have an interesting way of finding colors that work best for your complexion. but find a store and have one of the Prescriptives gals find your "colorprint"
