Do you think it matters if "pinups" don't live the pinup lifestyle every day?

Do you think it matters that me and other models like me aren't 'traditional' pin-up? The majority of my pictures aren't really pin-up at all, they are pin-up inspired, whether it be because of my hairstyle or my pose or the fact that I'm wearing fully fashioned stockings.

 

Does it annoy you when people who don't really live the Pin-Up Lifestyle at all, list themselves alongside classic pin-ups?

 

I often feel like certain people in the 'industry' look down on me because I don't wear full skirts and because I listen to Korn and because I wear more modern clothes, and I'm not really a classic pin-up at all.

 

What're your thoughts?

Well, seeing as how this website is called Pin Up Lifestyle, I think we pretty much all agree that Pin Up IS a lifestyle. It is the blanket name for everything that goes into the scene. Rockabilly, psychobilly, vintage, burlesque, etc. "Pin Up Lifestyle" is what we use as the umbrella term for everything.

 

That being said, you DO NOT have to live the lifestyle to model it. I think we can see from the amazing amount of responses that it doesn't matter if you live it, you can still love it, and model it!

Pin-Up isn't really a lifestyle. It is a genre of modelling. Psychobilly, rockabilly, etc. are lifestyles, along with styles of music. Some pin-up models are rockabilly, so they dress this way every day! Same with psychobilly. The point is, we all are open to many different types of beauty. Even though you don't dress like a pin-up when you're in your street clothes, you still appreciate the beauty of it, and its timelessness. That's all that really matters!!

Now whenever it comes to photos I am always making sure I dress to the style that I am asked by the photographer and it all depends on what is being photographed. Some times it is classic beauty shots are more classic clothing, rockabilly for car shoots and sometimes I mix old with new for other style shoots...

 

In every day life sometimes it is not best for me to wear my nice pinup wear to school. I am a art student and normally come to school with no make up, jeans and t-shirt. Alot of people don't reconize me when I am in my fun pinup clothing... its funny because I enjoy wearing all the time, just not during a oiling painting class. ;)

Shucks i think that you have to put your own touch to any style you like. It makes it more personal and authentic rather than repedative and over done.

Having an eclectic taste and experimenting with different looks makes you an interesting and creative person, and I think anybody who looks down on that must be incredibly ignorant, not to mention boring. You have a true interest in it, so that's all that matters. I dress in a '50s style pretty much every time I go out, but at home I'm a total slob. I don't lie there in full make-up, curled hair and a vintage slip listening to music on a gramophone. I have a bare face, hair in a bun, and huge pajamas on. And I have off days where I dress down- at the moment my dress down outfit is just leather pants and a Misfits t-shirt and I just wear that consistently when I can't be bothered making an effort. I feel most myself when I'm all done up, but it is hard work and sometimes I just haven't got the energy.
On the other hand, lately I've found myself getting a little irritated by this surge in girls who claim to have an interest in all things 'pin-up' (by this I mean films, people from these eras, music etc), when really they don't have a clue and they're just doing it because it's become trendy. It only annoys me because I believe a person should always be true to themselves and not dress in a way solely to impress others, or pretend to be interested in things they don't have a clue about because they think it makes them look cool. I find it insulting almost, when somebody's kind of 'using' things I really love, if that makes much sense?
All that said, though, if it's all just for a photo, does it really matter? As long as a person doesn't claim to be Bettie Page after doing a pin-up inspired photoshoot, then I have no problem with it whatsoever.

I feel that you ae who you are so why does it matter? I am also a fan of the classic pinup girl style and feel that the more modern is not the true rokabilly way. But everyone has their own style who am I to judge.

i don't think it matters, i think it's forced/fake if someone lives a certain (pin-up) lifestyle like that 24/7.

Forced/fake? That's a bold statement to make in a place like this. Just because YOU don't/can't live the lifestyle everyday doesn't mean someone who does is fake. There are many people here and around the world who live a "certain" lifestyle every day, and I'm pretty sure their lives aren't fake or forced.... but I bet they're happy.

Please consider what you're saying before you decide to insult the people who are in this community. Thank you.

I have some many facets to my personality and so many things I enjoy that if I were to constantly be living the pinup and retro lifestyle I would be cutting out styles and things from my life that I also enjoy. That being said - no I don't think it is important to live the lifestyle- some ladies do live the lifestyle and I applaud them but if it is not you don't force it, if you like a modern style outfit wear it and if you like a modern style music listen to it, the beauty of pinup today is that just like us it is a fusion of today and a time already past which leaves us all open to interpret it our own way and have our own unique artistic flares on our images :)
