"We Are The New Vintage"
Do you think it matters that me and other models like me aren't 'traditional' pin-up? The majority of my pictures aren't really pin-up at all, they are pin-up inspired, whether it be because of my hairstyle or my pose or the fact that I'm wearing fully fashioned stockings.
Does it annoy you when people who don't really live the Pin-Up Lifestyle at all, list themselves alongside classic pin-ups?
I often feel like certain people in the 'industry' look down on me because I don't wear full skirts and because I listen to Korn and because I wear more modern clothes, and I'm not really a classic pin-up at all.
What're your thoughts?

well...no, there are certain themes you dress for in a shoot maybe, but ultimately you live your own life. I attend pin-up pagents at classic hot rod shows to capture model photos, but also attend variety/burlesque/rock/whatever shows for my own amusement, work a lame day job with stuff to pay off. For anyone, it must be tough to live "the life" as defined by how it "used to be" when so much has changed over decades. I still throw back to my 80's/90's roots for most music. personally, I think pin-ups should be truly devout ONLY if they choose to be....good topic though!
I kinda agree on both sides, we all need those days when sick, or at a workplace that doesn't allow you to rock pinup all the time, or you live in a place where you get strange looks when you wear full skirts and victory rolls every day, its a little harder to live it. But then as someone who dresses pinup most days I help a friend whos a rockabilly babe and photographer and I've seen girls tell everyone they're pinups and only try to further theyre "modelling" by claiming it when they really have no interest in the lifestyle at all. Its not so much people not dressing pinup all the time thats annoying, its when the broadcast all the time that theyre soo into pinup blowing their own trumpets but then go straighten their hair and wear red lipstick and do a FHM shoot calling it "Pinup", thats irritating. Pinup carries a name of class, sexy and womanly, and it can be annoying to see people cheapen it.
Alice,
I love PINUP as well, would wear the clothes everyday if i could wear it or afford it.:) I only have a few photos that are pinup and would love to do more.
HOWEVER i still wold consider my self pinup . Its how You perceive yourself. I listen to ALL forms of music. and love all forms of art and photography.
We live for ourselves not for the opinion of others and to what others consider us to be.
Your pinup in your heart and that makes more of a pinup thn a picture.
xoxoxo.
I love all the ladies who inspire me .
PS your beautiful the way you are. jeans and tshirt
I agree. I have seen "photos of women claiming pinup and the photos have no class"such as the FHM mag.

As a photographer, I do not live and dress like I'm from the past.
Heck, how the hell would I be typing this if I did?
As a photographer it's rare that models I work with turn up to shoots in full on pinup outfits (unless they have to be shoot-ready on that occasion).
However I can't think of any models I've shot with who have had anything less than very full-on enthusiasm for the pinup look. It's infectious, and I guess a reason I love the photos - the love of it shines through in all these women.
As for my work, it's not exactly the "classic" pinup look, but I enjoy shooting my take on it. And I like to think my love of it shows too...

I agree that "pinup" to the community that love it (us) means something more, but pinups did originate at a time when those photos would have been the equivalent back then of FHM. Pinup is so called because the photos and paintings were pinned up by the men that admired them! We all love that retro look, but at the time they would have been seen as women with contemporary hair and makeup in risque clothing!

My television streams movies from NetFlix. That's how I watch movies like "American Graffiti" - that was made in 1973 by the same guy that did Star Wars. Huh? I'm a photographer, but have adapted the traditional American look to suite my lifestyle. It isn't always practical or possible to be Traditional every minute of every day. Living the "lifestyle" is also not that easy. I have big hair, wear jeans and T-shirts - there's even a black leather jacket hanging on the back of my chair right now. My house if full of mid century furniture, vintage bicycles, books, etc. but it also has central heat and air and I just had the electrical service upgraded from the original one that was put in when the house was built in 1954. The same thought process can be applied to modeling the "Pinup" look. There's always going to be someone out there that says that you're not "Pinup" enough or "Punk" enough or whatever... I'm assuming that that you were drawn to the genre because you saw something in it that appealed to you - don't let other folks deter you from that - take the core of what the look is about and make it your own. It's always commendable to honor the past and totally do it up retro style, but it's equally fun to go out as "Punk" or 1980's, etc. My photo shoots usually start out as traditional (as traditional as girls with tattoos and facial piercings can be ;) ) and finish up with Punk or Rock N Roll. As a model you can definitely pay tribute to the 40's - 50's, have fun with the 60's - 70's, get a little angry for the 80's and 90's and scrape the edge of what's still to come. Be yourself, honor the past, and have fun.
BTW, if you ever happen to be in Central Florida, do look me up as I'd love to shoot you.
Living pinup as a lifestyle? Never met anyone who did. I wonder what it would be like to be a photographer dressed in pinup style...
I've had gals walk into the studio looking like skate punks and ending up like they stepped out of an Irving Klaw film! That transformation is part of the challenge. Lacy Unlimited
A pin-up girl and or also known as a pin-up model, is a model whose mass-produced pictures see wide appeal as popular culture.
Pin-ups are intended for informal display, e.g. meant to be "pinned-up" on a wall. Pin-up girls may be glamor models, fashion models, or actresses.
The term pin-up may also refer to drawings, paintings, and other illustrations done in emulation of these photos . The term was first attested to in English in 1941; however, the practice is documented back at least to the 1890s.
The pin-up images could be cut out of magazines or newspapers, or be from postcard or chromo-lithographs, and so on. Such photos often appear on calendars, which are meant to be pinned up anyway. Later, posters of pin-up girls were mass-produced and became an instant hit.
That Being Said You Can Live Vintage or Rockabilly or Hollywood cira 1930 Not Pinup By Definition....
Pinup refers to Being Pinned on the Wall....
As for My View Each there Own I shoot Vintage, Pinup & Fetish I personally Live Vintage with Modern things as No One can compleately Live Vintage I use a Bank & Credit Cards along with a Modern Camera Equipment...lol
I understand Some Girls Who live Traditional Don't Like What We call Weekend warriors but the truth is Its 2011 and There for weather we live Vintage or Not Is Just a Preference in Lifestyle Don't a Definition of Who We are.
Nor Does it Give one Party right or Pass Judgement on Another.....
Truth Be told Weekend Warriors Pay My Bills wanting Modern Pinup as Much as Traditionals Do who Come to me becease they want true Vintage i.e. Draped back grounds, Vintage Props & Clothing for Replica Vintage Imagery....
Same Can Be said as for the Most Part of Fetish Photography A lot of Girls who wanna be Shot in that Style Don't Live a BDSM Lifestyle...
Again Pinup is Something Ya Like So Ya Pinned it Up on a Wall............
I find All Women Beautiful So.........I got a lot of Pin Holes
I was a into classic pin up in high school. I wore heels, a dress, and red lipstick nearly everyday to school and in my junior and senior year I worked an office job so it suited it well. However, I'm also an athlete. I've been an equestrian my whole life and compete in the Olympic sport of Eventing (Horse Triathlon) and spent a year in Las Vegas doing Muay Thai Kick Boxing and fighting. I'm currently in school to be a Phys. Ed teacher. In other words, I'm basically in work out clothes everyday and running shoes, with no make up. However, I love the pin up life style. I've always had a love for it. I really admire women who are able to dress pin up everyday, but I can't. I guess it's not a lifestyle for me anymore, but a style I admire. But in today's world I see modern pin ups as well, women like Sophia Vergara, or Kim Kardashian, women who never go out in public without lipstick, or heels and enhance their curvy frames.
I have noticed that when I do need to dress up, I'm still a fan of the curvy, tiny-waisted dresses, but I don't do my hair in any classic style very much anymore. Why? Because I feel I'm too muscular now to pull it off now although I still admire it very much.
