I would like to start making my own clothes

because we all know how expensive pin-up can get.
and teaching Taekwondo doesn't necessarily pay the bill for wardrobe expenses, and niether does singing at a restaraunt.

so i want to start making my own pinup clothes, except for lingerie, lol, that i'll buy. but

i want to know some simple designs that you've seen and if you make your own pinup clothes tell me about it!! or if you have patterns id love if you could email me them!!

I had this exact same thought, pin up clothing is so expensive online and i had a sewing machine collecting dust in my closet.
So yesterday i got it out and jumped on youtube and watched a tutorial to try and learn how to thread it and do all the bobbin stuff.
Would you believe, i couldn't figure it out, and my husband had to do it for me?!? Yes, my husband is a domestic god and i was totally unaware of it!
So now i'm considering starting a one man sweat shop.... he just doesn't know it yet!

you can find great vintage patterns on Ebay. and since you already have experience, then altering them to fit you the way that you want should be easy! Fabric.com is a great place to find good apparel fabric, and if you can find a discount textile place in your area, all the better!

Hey I'm in your shoes, not much money and a love for vintage, At first I got a pattern from a modern Vogue magazine at Joanne's fabric, but just the pattern was 25 bucks...then I found wonderful fabrics and patterns at ebay...just make sure you really understand your measurements! good luck

I've been thinking about doing this too. I can do basic sewing and have even made something for a shoot but never tried making an entire dress from scratch. Maybe ill check out the fabric store this weekend :)

I've been sewing my own pin up clothes for about a year now, It's really fun, and you get a great feeling when people ask you where you got your dress, and you answer, "I made it!"

Here are a few of my favorite vintage pattern websites. The last one I listed is somewhat expensive. And more recently I started searching in antique stores, and thrift shops for patterns, sometimes you find gold, and other times you find nothing!

I started by practicing on cheap $1.00per/yd fabric from wal-mart.

I have been getting more and more into sewing my own clothes. Although I do love shopping I just don't see fit to spend a arm and a leg on something that if I spend enough time at a sewing machine I could make it myself. I have made me a denim high waisted mini skirt just recently and working on the embroidery cherries on the bottom now. And I got the fabric for a steal at the JoAnns fabric clearance section for 6 bux a yard. Wish I bought more because it was a nice denim that stretched just enough to get the wiggle in your wiggle skirt :)

Oh, honey! I make almost all of my clothes! I'm a stay at home momma so I don't get a ton of spending money most of the time! My style is kind of 1940's-50's vintage so here are some of the patterns I've used:
butterick- B5029 (halter dress) B4790 (wrap dress) B5032 (very Marilyn Monroe dresses)B6582 (sexy wiggle dress) B5417 (view B for 1940's style dress) B5214 (late 40's halter dress) B5169 (rockabilly pinup pencil skirt and top) B4919 (full skirt halter dress) B5281 (40's pin-up dress)
Simplicity-2785 (great little skirt, easy to make) 2656 (sailor style pants) 2475 (smokin hot amazing fit pencil skirt)
Vogue-V2787 amazing 40's dress, very slinky, shows off your curves, love it!)
All of these patterns are currently available at any fabric store. If you check the fabirc store websites, you can wait a week or so and they will always go on sale for 99 cents! Also, JoAnne Fabrics and Hancock fabrics has 50% off printable coupons so you can get great deals on fabrics. A lot of times, I cut out 2 or 3 projects at a time and when my baby goes down for a nap, I can sew non-stop! Cutting takes the most time. Good luck!!

62 years later, and the only differences between then and now are that I use chalk instead of tailor's tacks, and I don't use a pressing cloth when I iron. :)
